SSM Health Care Hospitals Accepted Into Bundled Payment Programs

SSM St. Mary's Health Center in Richmond Heights, Mo., and SSM DePaul Health Center in St. Louis have been accepted by The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation for two different "Bundled Payments for Care Improvement" pilot programs.

SSM DePaul Health Center will focus on bundled payments for orthopedic care, while SSM St. Mary's Health Center will contract with CMS on bundled payments for patients with congestive heart failure. SSM Health Care – St. Louis will manage the bundled payments.

"The pilots give SSM Health Care the opportunity to be part of shaping how the government will restructure its payment process for Medicare and Medicaid patients," said Jay Moore, MD, SSM DePaul Health Center's CMO, in a statement.

The financial risk to participate in the voluntary pilots falls entirely on the participants.

SSM DePaul Health Center is already working on bundled payments. In March 2011, SSM Health Care – St. Louis began a venture with Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield in Missouri to pilot bundled payments for orthopedic procedures done at the SSM DePaul Joint Replacement Center.
