Prominent pediatric surgeon to join U of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School faculty

Nationally renowned pediatric heart surgeon Charles Fraser Jr., MD, will join the faculty at the University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School, the institution said in a statement March 19.

Here are four things to know about Dr. Fraser.

1. At UT Austin, Dr. Fraser will serve as a professor in the departments of surgery and perioperative care and pediatrics at the medical school. He will also serve as the chief of pediatric and congenital cardiothoracic surgery at the Austin-based Dell Children's Medical Center of Central Texas, part of St. Louis-based Ascension.

2. At the medical school, Dr. Fraser will teach and continue to develop his research, which centers on surgical outcomes and quality, brain protection and bioengineering as a way to correct congenital heart defects.

3. Dr. Fraser spent 23 years as surgeon-in-chief at Houston-based Texas Children's Hospital and co-director of the institution's heart program before heading to UT Austin.

4. He received his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and completed his residency at Baltimore-based The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
