Physician Assistants Fight for Increased Practice Rights in Kentucky

Physician assistants in Kentucky are lobbying to repeal a law that limits their scope of practice, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

Currently, PAs in the state are required to have on-site supervision from a physician for the first 18 months after their certification, the longest on-site supervision requirement in the country, says the Wall Street Journal. The Kentucky Academy of Physician Assistants is planning a rally and has hired two lobbyists to help with the fight to repeal the law, according to the report.

The Kentucky Medical Association, which represents the state's physicians, pushed for the on-site supervision requirement and has already helped block two prior attempts to repeal it, according to the report.

The fight for increased scope of care comes at a time when the demand for PAs is growing in light of the looming physician shortage, as PAs can take some of the workload off physicians' shoulders.
