Ohio State Wexner to add 500 clinicians, researchers over 5 years

Columbus-based Ohio State University College of Medicine and OSU Wexner Medical Center announced a five-year hiring plan June 11 that will bring 500 biomedical sciences faculty to the institution.

Here are three things to know:

1. Under the hiring initiative, Ohio State will hire 350 clinicians and 150 research scientists. Officials have already selected roughly 50 research faculty members to join the medical school.

2. The new faculty will be instrumental in crafting a cross-disciplinary health sciences curriculum in which students will take foundational courses in the classroom and join practitioners in clinical settings.

3. To accommodate the increase in faculty, Ohio State aims to construct a state-of-the-art medical campus to promote interdisciplinary research. The campus will comprise a projected 840-bed hospital tower and ambulatory center, along with several other facilities.

"We have experienced tremendous growth in the past few years and are actively planning for significant growth in facilities, services and scholarship as part of the university’s strategic plan. Instead of 'if you build it, they will come,' our approach is 'join us now and help us build for the future,'" K. Craig Kent, MD, dean of the Ohio State University College of Medicine and vice president of health sciences at Wexner Medical Center, said in the June 11 announcement.
