Great Neck, N.Y.-based Northwell Health and Hempstead, N.Y.-based Hofstra University renamed their medical school to honor Donald and Barbara Zucker, who have donated $61 million to the facility in recent years.

The medical school which was launched in 2008 is now called Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofsta/Northwell.

Over the past few years, the couple donated $50 million to provide scholarships to medical students, $10 million to establish the Barbara Hrbek Zucker emerging Scientists Program to train postdoctoral fellows and $1 million in scholarship support for nursing school and physician assistant students.

The couple has also supported other initiatives across Northwell Health, including funding projects at Glen Oaks, N.Y.-based Zucker Hillside Hospital, the Lenox Hospital in Manhattan, N.Y., and Manhasset, N.Y.-based Elmezzi Graduate School of Molecular Medicine.

"More so than any other donors in our history, Don and Barbara Zucker have been extraordinary supporters of causes where we have historically struggled to get financial support, including behavioral health programs," said Michael Dowling, president and CEO of Northwell Health. "Their latest gifts are a testament to the Zuckers' leadership as philanthropists who recognize the vital role of medical education and research in transforming the future of medicine."
