Northwell Health affiliates with 600-physician group

New York's largest health system, Northwell Health, and its largest independent medical group, CareMount Medical, are joining forces with a clinical affiliation agreement announced Dec. 10.

The New Hyde Park-based health system and Chappaqua-based medical group, which will remain independent as part of the agreement, plan to launch their new partnership Jan. 1, which may include clinical integration and population health initiatives. The two entities also plan to collaborate on ambulatory strategy. Northwell has roughly 750 outpatient facilities and 200 primary care practices, while the multispecialty medical practice brings a team of more than 600 physicians and advanced practice providers at 45 locations to the partnership. CareMount also operates urgent care centers, clinical laboratories, radiology services sites, endoscopy suites and infusion suites.

"We're extraordinarily pleased to be taking this important next step in our relationship with CareMount, which has a well-earned reputation for delivering high-quality care and optimizing the patient experience," Michael Dowling, president and CEO of Northwell, said in a press release. "We look forward to pursuing mutually beneficial opportunities that will further enhance patient care."

CareMount clinicians will be given faculty appointments at Northwell's Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra, based in Hempstead, N.Y.

The new agreement builds on CareMount's existing relationship with Northern Westchester Hospital in Mount Kisco, which is part of Northwell Health.

Editor's note: This story was updated Dec. 12 at 9:10 a.m. CT to clarify that CareMount will remain independent.
