The Nurse Practitioners Modernization Act, which will allow New York nurse practitioners more latitude to practice independently of physicians, is set to pass before the end of the week, according to a report from Syracuse.com.
The act will remove the current nurse-physician written practice agreement requirement as a condition of practice and will take effect Jan. 1, 2015, according to the report. When the act is passed, New York will be the 17th state to have such a law.
While federal physician groups are opposed to the bill, the Nurse Practitioner Association of New York State indicates the change may help moderate the nationwide physician shortage and "will ensure New Yorkers have access to high quality care," according to the report.
