New Mayo residency program to alleviate shortage in rural Wisconsin

Staff -

Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic Health System will be opening a new Mayo Clinic Family Medicine Residency Program in northwest Wisconsin to ease the demand for primary care physicians, according to a Leader-Telegram report.

Physicians in the three-year program will see patients at Mayo Clinic Health System sites in Eau Claire, Wis., as well as numerous rural Wisconsin sites and areas including Barron, Bloomer, Menomonie and Osseo.

As many as 15 residents, five per year over the three-year residency, will have the opportunity to participate in the program and the first class to graduate would do so in 2020, according to the report.

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services will be awarding Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire a $750,000 grant — $250,000 a year for three years — for the family medicine residency program.

The Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education in Rochester will sponsor the program and it will seek accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.
