National Science Foundation: Top 10 universities that spent the most on research in 2016

Federal funding for higher education research and development increased approximately 1.4 percent between fiscal year 2015 and fiscal year 2016, according to a Nov. 30 report released by the National Science Foundation.

Using data from the higher education R&D survey conducted by the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics and the National Science Foundation, researchers determined the top 30 universities that spent the most on R&D in 2016. The top 30 institutions' spending constituted 42 percent of the total funds the higher education sector spent on R&D during fiscal year 2016.

Here are the top 10 U.S. universities that spent the most on R&D in 2016.

  1. The Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore) — $2.43 billion
  2. University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) — $1.44 billion
  3. University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia) — $1.3 billion
  4. UC San Francisco — $1.29 billion
  5. University of Washington (Seattle) — $1.28 billion
  6. University of Wisconsin-Madison — $1.16 billion
  7. UC San Diego (La Jolla, Calif.) — $1.09 billion
  8. Harvard University (Cambridge, Mass.) — $1.08 billion
  9. Stanford (Calif.) University — $1.07 billion
  10. Duke University (Durham, N.C.) — $1.06 billion
