Medicine has more working mothers than other professions

Medicine is a "stealth family-friendly profession," according to The New York Times.

Female physicians are more likely to have children than their counterparts with law degrees, business degrees or doctorates, and physicians are also less likely to stop working when they have kids, according to the report. This may be because medicine is beginning to offer more flexible and predictable hours as physicians join groups or hospitals. Telemedicine and the internet also allow for some remote work.

Female physicians tend to choose specialties that require fewer hours because child-bearing years typically overlap with residency, according to the report. When medical residency hours were capped in 2003, more women became surgeons and neurologists, which were historically more time-intensive.
