Milwaukee-based Medical College of Wisconsin received a $37.8 million gift from the Kern Family Foundation, the largest philanthropic gift in school history, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

The gift will launch the Robert D. and Patricia E. Kern Institute for the Transformation of Medical Education to advance new ideas in medical education.

After construction of the institute, the Medical College of Wisconsin will join six other medical schools in the National Transformation Network.

"The investment making this all possible is the single largest gift from an individual or family in MCW's history," said Medical College of Wisconsin President and CEO John Raymond Sr., MD, at an event Thursday, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "It's a transformational opportunity for MCW, for our partners and for American medical education. And it also is an inspirational demonstration of the power of philanthropy in support of medical education."
