Many Employed Physicians Not Fully Integrated: Survey

Staff -

Physician employment does not automatically lead to physician integration, a new American College of Physician Executives survey found.

Survey results are based on responses from 617 ACPE members. ACPE members include CEOs, CMOs, vice presidents of medical affairs, medical directors and other physicians.

Forty-seven percent of respondents indicated they didn't consider employed physicians to be fully integrated into the organization's performance improvement initiatives. Similarly, 49 percent said their organization didn't have a financial incentive program in place to encourage engagement in those initiatives.

Additionally, employed physicians don't seem to be integrated with the financial success of the organization. Sixty percent of respondents said the employed physicians were not integrated in that way, and just 30 percent said their organizations had financial incentives in place to encourage integration.

Despite the lack of full integration and engagement of employed physicians, both physicians and executives seem satisfied with the employment model. Eighty percent of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that employed physicians in their organization were satisfied with the employed physician model, and 85 percent said the same for administrative leaders.
