MaineHealth, MidCoast Hospital to allow clinicians to opt out of physician-assisted suicide

Maine hospitals and health systems are working to develop internal policies for providers after a law went into effect last fall that allows patients with terminal illness to request life-ending medication, the Bangor Daily News reports.  

Two organizations, MaineHealth in Portland and MidCoast Hospital in Brunswick, told the Bangor Daily News they developed internal policies that will allow physicians and other medical staff to opt out of providing assisted-suicide treatment. Several other health systems are still working on their policies, according to the report.

Seven other states and Washington, D.C., have similar laws, according to the report.
