Longtime UW Medicine pathology professor dies from COVID-19

Stephen Schwartz, MD, PhD, a professor in the University of Washington School of Medicine's pathology department, died March 17 after being hospitalized with COVID-19. He was 78 years old.

"Dr. Schwartz will be remembered for his vigorous advocacy for research and for the field of vascular biology as well as for his many trainees who have gone on to great success as independent investigators in the field of vascular pathobiology," reads a remembrance from Paul G. Ramsey, MD, CEO of UW Medicine, executive vice president for medical affairs and dean of the UW School of Medicine. "Dr. Schwartz has left a lasting imprint on the UW School of Medicine and the broader scientific community. He will be greatly missed."

Dr. Schwartz joined the department of pathology in 1967 and became a full professor in 1984. He was an investigator in the field of vascular biology and was named an established an investigator of the American Heart Association. He was also a founding chair of the Gordon Research Conference on vascular biology and a co-founder of the North American Vascular Biology Organization.
