Kentucky OBGYN delivers patient's baby while in labor with her own

Amanda Hess, MD, an obstetrician-gynecologist affiliated with Frankfort (Ky.) Regional Medical Center, will never forget the birth of her daughter — for more reasons than one.

Dr. Hess, who was admitted to Frankfort Regional to give birth, delivered a fellow patient's baby the same day, according to WKYT

Leah Halliday Johnson, another patient at the hospital, was fully dilated and ready to have her baby. However, the physician on call was on his way back to the hospital after leaving on a break, so Dr. Hess stepped in to deliver the baby.

"[A] lot of doctors are always thinking of their patients even when they're a patient themselves," she told WKYT. "I just put on another gown to cover up my backside and put on some boots over my shoes, to keep from getting any fluid and all that stuff on me, and went down to her room."

Dr. Hess instantly recognized Ms. Halliday Johnson as a patient she performed a checkup on just a few days earlier. After a successful delivery, Dr. Hess gave birth to her own baby girl later that day.
