Illinois physician agrees to hike Mount Kilimanjaro with his patient

Alyssa Rege -

After overcoming his pancreatic cancer diagnosis, Ken Brown decided to accomplish one of his lifelong dreams — hiking Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania — and was successfully able to convince his oncologist to come along for the ride.

Mr. Brown told ABC-7 Chicago he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2013. After extensive research, he sought out Malcolm Bilimoria, MD, an oncology surgeon at Arlington Heights, Ill.-based Northwest Community Healthcare, and underwent surgery and multiple rounds of chemotherapy.

Mr. Brown said he mentioned his hiking plans to Dr. Bilimoria during one his final checkups. After checking with his own physician, Dr. Bilimoria agreed to accompany Mr. Brown on the hike.

Mr. Brown and Dr. Bilimoria leave later this week and will begin their six-day hike Sunday. The two individuals will reportedly be joined by several other physicians, according to the report.
