Meridian-based Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine, the state's first medical school, opened its application process for its inaugural class of students, KMVT-11 News.

The move follows the recent decision by the American Osteopathic Association's Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation to advance the medical school's accreditation status. The school can also legally drop "proposed" from its name, the report states.

Medical school officials have secured affiliations with 32 healthcare facilities to enable the school's inaugural class to begin their clinical rotations in 2020.

The school, which was created in partnership with Pocatello-based Idaho State University, has also allocated $5 million-plus toward the development of residency programs during its first 10 years.

"This is a major milestone for ICOM," said Robert Hasty, DO, the founding dean and chief academic officer of the Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine. "Our application process is now open. … We will be recruiting the best and brightest students who want to be caring and competent physicians."
