How to integrate clinical pathways after a merger

Staff -

Though uncertainty surrounding the fate of the ACA has somewhat slowed the rate of hospital and health system consolidation, 2017 marks continued merger and acquisition activity as healthcare providers prepare for value-based care programs like the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act, bundled payment demonstrations and more.

There were 19 publicly announced hospital acquisitions in the first quarter of 2017, according to HealthCareMandA.com, and 2016 counted 102 hospital transactions throughout the year, according to Kaufman Hall & Associates. The push to value-based care is expected to propel this trend of elevated M&A throughout the year as providers seek to realign themselves to meet the demands of a new healthcare ecosystem.

But a legal transaction does not mean clinical best practices will spread throughout a newly merged entity. Achieving the benefits of true systemness requires strategy, leadership and infrastructure.
