How Do Physicians Find New Practice Opportunities?

Networking with colleagues is physicians' most preferred job hunting method, whereas social media is much less utilized when searching for a practice, according to a survey from The Medicus Firm.

As part of The Medicus Firm's 2013 "Physician Practice Preference & Relocation Survey," physicians identified which resources they found most useful in finding a practice. Figures reflect responses from a pool of 2,568 physicians representing 19 specialties.

Physicians in practice
1. Networking with colleagues — 32.1 percent
2. Online physician job boards — 29.3 percent
3. Physician recruiting firms — 27.6 percent
4. Journal advertisements — 6.8 percent
5. Smartphone or tablet apps — 2.3 percent
6. Social media (LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, online physician networks, etc.) — 1.8 percent

Physicians in training
1. Networking with colleagues — 42.3 percent
2. Physician recruiting firms — 26 percent
3. Online physician job boards — 25.1 percent
4. Journal advertisements — 3.1 percent
5. Smartphone or tablet apps — 2.6 percent
6. Social media (LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, online physician networks, etc.) — 0.9 percent
