HIMSS, Association of Medical Directors of Information Systems present leadership award to Dr. Colin Banas

The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society and the Association of Medical Directors of Information Systems honored Colin Banas, MD, with the 2018 HIMSS-AMDIS Physician Executive Leader of the Year Award, the organizations announced Jan. 18.

Each year, HIMSS and AMDIS present the award to a physician leader who the associations determine "demonstrates significant leadership in optimizing health engagements and care outcomes through information technology."

Here are four things to know about Dr. Banas.

1. Dr. Banas, a board-certified internist, serves as chief medical information officer and an associate professor of internal medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center in Richmond.

2. He leads the hospital's office of clinical transformation, a group of clinicians and support staff focused on applying IT at the point of care. His primary interests are implementing real-time dashboards and clinical decision support.

3. In 2014, Dr. Banas was named a national health IT fellow by the ONC. He has testified before the ONC and the U.S. Senate Committee on Finance to discuss how to leverage health IT and meaningful use to improve patient care.

4. He is an active member of HIMSS and AMDIS, in addition to professional societies like the American Medical Informatics Association, the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives and the American College of Physician Executives.
