HHS to give $319M in loan repayments to clinicians treating underserved patients

Emily Rappleye -

HHS is awarding $319 million in scholarships and loan repayments to clinicians and students who participate in the National Health Service Corps, a program that brings care to underserved communities. HHS announced the awards Oct. 23.

The Service Corps, part of HHS' Health Resources and Services Administration, includes more than 13,000 clinicians and nearly 1,480 students and medical residents. The awards include $80 million to support substance use disorder treatment at more than 2,000 rural sites, significantly expanding the Service Corps' work to address the opioid epidemic.

"The NHSC story of service, commitment, and community is a powerful one. These awards not only get more NHSC providers into the communities that need them the most, but also help to keep those physicians working there long term," HRSA Acting Administrator Tom Engels said in press release.
