Gallup: Physicians Least Likely Among Workers to be Overweight, Miss Work

Staff -
Workplace absenteeism related to poor employee health costs the U.S. economy $84 billion each year in lost productivity, but physicians are least likely to miss work, according to Gallup poll results. Conversely, managers and executives were among the sickest and costliest in the survey.

Just less than 68 percent of physicians were overweight or suffered from one or more chronic conditions, the lowest of all 14 job types studied ranging from business owners to fishermen. Physicians with such health complications missed only 0.04 more days of work per month than their healthier colleagues, compared with 0.41 more days per month among transportation workers.

Physician absenteeism cost $250 million in lost productivity each year, second only to the farmers, fishers and foresters job category's $160 million. Managers and executives, 78.8 percent of whom were overweight or had a chronic condition and missed 0.29 days monthly more than their healthier peers, cost $15.7 billion due to absenteeism.
