Dozens attended a memorial service at Durham, N.C.-based Duke University Sept. 20 to honor four victims involved in a Duke University Health System Life Flight helicopter crash earlier this month, according to The Herald-Sun.
The helicopter was transporting a critical care patient from Elizabeth City-based Sentara Albemarle Medical Center to Durham-based Duke Medical Center Sept. 8 when mechanical issues reportedly caused the helicopter to go down. Three Duke medical personnel and the patient were killed in the crash.
During the ceremony Kevin Sowers, RN, MSN, president of Duke University Hospital, told attendees a few details about each victim, and relayed the patient's family's praise regarding the crew, the report states. Duke personnel, the patient's family and emergency medical services crews from across the nation attended the memorial service Wednesday.
Mr. Sowers said Duke personnel will begin participating in "confidence flights" Sept. 21 and will officially resume transporting patients on Life Flight helicopters Sept. 25, according to the report.
