DMC, Wayne State Physician Group resume talks after brief stalemate

Emily Rappleye -

Detroit Medical Center and Detroit-based Wayne State University Physician Group broke off contract negotiations Wednesday, but are ready to resume, according to a report from Crain's Detroit Business.

WSU Medical School Dean Jack Sobel, MD, sent an email Wednesday that the groups were successful in reaching agreement on finances, according to The Detroit News. However, he claimed the talks broke down when it came to discussion over a nonsolicitation agreement. This agreement keeps both organizations from seeking services of each other's employees for a period of time, which the physician group says protects its physicians from poaching by DMC, according to the report. The Detroit News reported DMC felt the talks were at an impasse Wednesday, not over.

Details from Crain's confirm both DMC and the physician group are willing to resume negotiations. The Crain's report indicates DMC disagrees with the Wayne State University Physician Group's version of why the talks broke down. Wayne State plans to continue to push for a nonsolicitation agreement, which it claims was part of its 2010 contract with DMC, according to the report. DMC previously told Crain's it was surprised by the request to include the nonsolicitation agreement, according to the report.

The current contract expires on Sept. 30.
