Detroit Medical Center hospitals to train more Meharry med students

Detroit Medical Center and Nashville, Tenn.-based Meharry Medical College have expanded their affiliation to allow more Meharry medical students to train at DMC hospitals, the organizations announced.

The affiliation, which began in July 2018, provides Meharry medical students with the opportunity to train at DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital in Detroit. The new, two-year agreement will add Meharry medical students at all DMC hospitals.

"DMC's focus on serving as a leading academic medical institution remains as strong as ever with training and education core to our mission," Anthony Tedeschi, MD, the medical center's CEO, said in a news release. "We are committed to all of our academic partner relationships, and this expanded affiliation with Meharry provides even more medical students with an optimum learning environment. There are few other instructional settings with the type of patient diversity found at the Detroit Medical Center."

Veronica Mallett, MD, Meharry senior vice president of health affairs and dean of Meharry Medical College School of Medicine, said the program could help address the primary physician shortage in the Detroit area if Meharry medical students decide to continue their training at DMC and practice in the area.

DMC is an academic institution with roots dating  to the late 1800s. Meharry is one of the oldest and largest historically black academic health science centers in the U.S.
