Citing improved quality and lower costs at two existing accountable care organization pilots, Cigna plans to more than double its ACO pilots this year, according to a Cigna release.
Cigna said it expects to have implemented or be actively planning about 30 ACO collaboratives by the end of the year, up from eight Cigna-only and four multi-payer pilots in operation now.
Preliminary results show a Cigna-backed pilot at Dartmouth-Hitchcock in New Hampshire is closing gaps in care by 10 percent and the Cigna Medical Group in Phoenix has lowered average per-patient costs by $336 a year.
In addition, Cigna last month convened its first quarterly "learning collaborative" with participating physician practices. In the meeting, practices shared best practices in care coordination, focusing on managing gaps in care.
Cigna's 12 current initiatives are in 11 states, involving 100,000 Cigna customers and 1,800 physicians. Programs include multi-payer pilots in Colorado, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Vermont and Cigna-only collaborative initiatives in Arizona, Connecticut, Georgia, Maine, Missouri, New Hampshire, Tennessee and Texas.
