CalPERS ACO Pilot May Produce $15.5M Savings

An accountable care organization pilot involving the California Public Employees' Retirement System, Blue Shield of California HMO, San Francisco-based Catholic Healthcare West and Hill Physicians Medical Group may produce $15.5 million in savings, according to a CalPERS news release.

The pilot study, which began in Jan. 2010, reported reductions of 17 percent in average patient length of stay, 14 percent in total patient length of stay and 50 percent in the number of patients with a 20-day or longer length of stay through Oct. 2010. The program estimates savings of $15.5 million by its end in December.

CalPERS Health Benefits Assistant Executive Officer Kathleen Billingsley said CalPERS is interested in expanding the model, according to the release.
