California physicians, healthcare workers report for work after homes burn in wildfire

With California's Carr wildfire burning just miles away and no homes to go back to, eight physicians and healthcare workers reported for their shifts at Shasta Regional Medical Center in Redding, the Sacramento Bee reported.

Mercy Medical Center Redding and the VA Redding Outpatient Clinic reported similar turnout among staff whose homes had burned. The three medical facilities are operating with less staff than normal, as many were forced to evacuate the area. However, the facilities have enough staff to serve patients, according to the report.

Shasta Regional and Mercy Redding canceled elective surgeries July 26, and Mercy Redding transferred babies from the neonatal intensive care unit to other regional hospitals.

The Carr fire started July 23 and is 17 percent contained, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
