Atlanta's Cigna and Piedmont Medical Launch Georgia's First ACO

Cigna and Piedmont Physicians Group in Atlanta launched the state's first accountable care organization pilot program, according to a Cigna news release.

The program, involving a medical practice and a single private payor, currently covers 10,000 patients with coverage from a Cigna health plan. The patients receive care from one of the 100 physicians who are members of the Piedmont Physicians Group.

During the pilot, the Piedmont Physicians Group practice will monitor and coordinate all aspects of a patient's medical care. There will not be any change in plan requirements regarding referrals to specialists. The pay for performance structure will be implemented if the physicians meet targets for improving quality and lowering medical costs.
