Atlanta hospital reopens following shooting

Northside Medical Midtown hospital in Atlanta reopened May 8 following a shooting inside the facility May 3 that killed one and injured four others.

Northside said May 8 two of the four survivors were staff members at the hospital's Laureate Medical Group, the offices where the shooting took place. At this time, it remains unclear if the other two victims were patients.

"Employees and physicians are returning to the facility — reuniting under a heavy cloud of grief yet resuming their important services to their patients and their families," the hospital stated in a May 8 news release. "They are being greeted by additional uniformed security officers, Northside spiritual leaders, human resources representatives, and behavioral and spiritual health counselors. Physicians are encouraged to participate in a peer-to-peer support service, also being provided at Northside Midtown."

The single fatality from the incident was CDC employee Amy St. Pierre, 38.

"CDC is deeply saddened by the unexpected loss of a colleague killed Wednesday in the Midtown Atlanta shooting," the agency shared in a statement with Becker's. "Our hearts are with her family, friends, and colleagues as they remember her and grieve this tragic loss."

After the incident the facility closed May 4 and took May 5 as a day of reflection. While most offices are reopened, Northside noted that Laureate Medical Group section remains closed while staff develop plans to resume patient care.
