AMA honors 10 government officials for outstanding service in medicine, public health

The American Medical Association presented 10 individuals Tuesday with its most prestigious award for elected officials and government employees: the Dr. Nathan Davis Award for Outstanding Government Service. Winners include former CMS leaders and National Institutes of Health researchers.

"For more than a quarter century of the Nathan Davis Awards, the AMA has sought to salute government officials who go above and beyond the call of duty to improve public health," AMA Board Chair Patrice Harris, MD, said in a press release. "Award winners have come from every branch of government service and confirm the important role public officials can have creating and implementing health policies that benefit Americans."

The award is named for the physician organization's founder, Nathan Davis, MD. Here are the 2017 recipients of the Dr. Nathan Davis Award for Outstanding Government Service and the category they won in.

  • Sen. John Barrasso, MD, R-Wyo., U.S. Senate
  • Rep. Phil Roe, MD, R-Tenn., U.S. House of Representatives
  • Andy Slavitt, former CMS acting administrator, member of the executive branch serving by presidential/political appointment
  • Patrick Conway, MD, CMS acting administrator, member of the executive branch in career public service
  • Janine Austin Clayton, MD, associate director for research on women's health and director of the office of research on women's health at NIH, member of the executive branch in career public service for scientific advancement
  • Wisconsin Rep. John Nygren, R-Marinette, member of a state general assembly
  • Texas Sen. Kirk Watson, D-Austin, member of a state senate
  • Dave Jones, California insurance commissioner, governor or elected statewide official
  • Elizabeth Roberts, former Rhode Island secretary of health and human services, career public servant at the state level
  • Don Crowson, chief of the Arlington (Texas) Fire Department, career public servant at the local level
