ACGME rolls out new teaching initiative

Staff -

The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education is planning a new, four-year initiative that will improve teaching practices and patient care in health systems and ambulatory sites where medical residents pursue learning in specific specialties.

The initiative, called Pursuing Excellence in Clinical Learning Environments, is part of the ACGME's Clinical Learning Environment Review (CLER) initiative. Created in 2012, the CLER initiative provides hospitals with feedback regarding how well they're engaging residents in pursuing quality and safety metrics.

The goal of the Pursuing Excellence Initiative (PEI) is to create a shared learning community to better bring about improvements to patient care and healthcare delivery. Through the PEI, the ACGME is partnering with 21 national healthcare organizations, including the American Hospital Association and the American Medical Association.

More information regarding the PEI will be released in mid-February.
