7 statistics on how millennial physicians approach care delivery

Emily Rappleye -

Millennial physicians ages 26 to 36 are bringing a new perspective to patient relationships, clinical decision making and attitudes regarding the pharmaceutical industry, according to a survey published by inVentiv Health.

Here are seven statistics from the survey that offer a glimpse into the world of the millennial physician.

  • Two-thirds of millennial physicians tailor their approach to care delivery to the age of the patient. This means they may ask a fellow millennial patient to do more research on their own, and would provide simplified explanations for non-millennial patients.
  • Roughly half (42 percent) of millennial physicians said they find peer education experiences are the best vehicle to learn about new treatments, compared to 18 percent of non-millennial physicians.
  • Few millennial physicians (16 percent) find pharmaceutical manufacturers influence their decisions to use new treatments, compared to 48 percent of older physicians.
  • Almost two-thirds of millennial physicians (60 percent) said they would be more likely to see a pharmaceutical sales representative if the rep has patient programs in his or her portfolio.
  • Millennial physicians value discussion guides (48 percent) and adherence support (40 percent) most from pharmaceutical reps.
  • Most millennial providers (81 percent) believe direct-to-consumer advertising becomes a burden for them because patients ask for medications they don't need.
  • Millennial physicians are less likely than their older counterparts to be swayed by patient requests for medications and treatments, at 23 percent and 41 percent, respectively.
