5 Key Elements of a Patient-Engagement Strategy

Staff -
Patient engagement is becoming increasingly critical to a hospital's longevity in the current era of healthcare reform. Elements of patient engagement are required for success under CMS' value-based purchasing program, the hospital readmissions reduction program, accountable care organization formation and even meaningful use.

As a result, hospitals should begin to develop an integrated strategy to achieving patient engagement. According to Gary Kolbeck, general manager of LodgeNet Healthcare, and author of a new white paper titled, "Patient & Family Engagement: Using Patient-Facing Technologies to Improve the Quality of Patient Care," a patient engagement strategy should contain five key elements.

1. Employs the use of technology.

2. Can be implemented within the inpatient environment.

3. Extends patient-facing communications across the continuum of care

4. Is actually effective at motivating patient involvement in care and educating patients about their care role.

5. Is designed to reach all patients, including the most vulnerable and traditionally underserved.
