41 statistics on medical resident benefits & salary — insurance, vacation days and more

Most medical schools and teaching hospitals offer 16 to 21 vacation days to their medical residents, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges "Survey of Resident/Fellow Stipends and Benefits Report: 2014-2015."

The survey collected data for the 2014 to 2015 academic year. There were 186 institutions that responded; 49 of those institutions were medical schools and 137 were non-VA Council of Teaching Hospital and Health System members.

The following are 41 statistics on medical resident's insurance coverage, paid time off days and pay, pulled from the survey.

Annual vacation days

1. 0 to 10 days: 4.7 percent
2. 11 to 15 days: 39.5 percent
3. 16 to 21 days: 42.4 percent
4. 22 to 28 days: 11.6 percent
5. 29 or more: 1.7 percent

Sick days

6. 0 to 10 days: 41 percent
7. 11 to 15 days: 48.6 percent
8. 16 to 21 days: 6.3 percent
9. 22 to 28 days: 0.7 percent
10. 29 or more: 3.5 percent

Holidays

11. 0 to 10 days: 89.6 percent
12. 11 to 15 days: 9.6 percent
13. 16 to 21 days: 0.8 percent
14. 22 to 28 days: 0 percent
15. 29 or more: 0 percent

Personal days

16. 0 to 10 days: 94.8 percent
17. 11 to 15 days: 1.7 percent
18. 16 to 21 days: 1.7 percent
19. 22 to 28 days: 1.7 percent
20. 29 or more: 0 percent

Time paid off, including sick leave

21. 0 to 10 days: 1.3 percent
22. 11 to 15 days: 5.7 percent
23. 16 to 21 days: 17.2 percent
24. 22 to 28 days: 11.5 percent
25. 29 or more: 64.3 percent

Life insurance premium coverage

26. Fully paid: 77.1 percent
27. Cost shared: 15.9 percent
28. Available but not paid by institution: 5.5 percent
