2 physicians named among 2017 MacArthur 'genius' grant winners

Alyssa Rege -

Two physicians were named among this year's John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation 2017 MacArthur Fellowship award recipients.

This year's fellows — more commonly referred to as MacArthur "genius" grant recipients — include 24 individuals engaged in a variety of disciplines, including medicine, the arts, music and academia.

To be considered for the fellowships — which comprise a $625,000, no-strings-attached award for each recipient — potential fellows must show exceptional creativity and the promise for important future advances based on previous significant accomplishments. Individuals must also explain how the fellowship would facilitate subsequent creative work.

The two physicians named among the 2017 MacArthur fellows include:

  • Gabriel Victora, PhD, a 40-year-old immunologist at the Laboratory of Lymphocyte Dynamics at New York City-based The Rockefeller University
  • Betsy L. Paluck, PhD, a 39-year-old psychology professor and deputy director of the Kahneman-Treisman Center for Behavioral Science & Policy at Princeton (N.J.) University.
