California retained 70.4 percent of the physicians that completed residency in the state, in comparison to New Hampshire, which retained only 28.1 percent of residents in 2016, according to data from the Association of American Medical Colleges.
Here are the 10 states that retained the most physicians after they complete residency or a fellowship program, along with their retention percentage.

6. Arkansas (55.8 percent)
7. Indiana (54.9 percent)
8. Nevada (54 percent)
9. Oregon (53.4 percent)
10. Idaho (53.1 percent)
Here are the states that retained the fewest residents and fellows, along with the percentage of physicians that stayed to practice.

3. Wyoming (29.7 percent)
4. Rhode Island (30.4 percent)
5. Vermont (32.9 percent)
6. Connecticut (35 percent)

10. Virginia (39.1 percent)
Overall, the AAMC data finds that two-thirds (67.1 percent) of physicians who completed their undergraduate medical education and residency in the same state remained in that state to practice.
