Why hospitals should consider 'shadow boards'

As organizations — including hospitals — struggle to engage younger workers and respond quickly to evolving market trends, executives may find success in implementing "shadow boards."

A shadow board is a group of nonexecutive employees who work alongside senior executives on strategic goals, according to the Harvard Business Review. The purpose of the board is to glean insight from younger employees and diversify what ideas are run by executives.

For example, luxury fashion producer Gucci created a shadow board made up of millennials. Since 2015, the board has met regularly with senior management to talk through key issues executives are focused on. The company's CEO, Mario Bizzarri, said the shadow board has "served as a wake-up call for the executives."

For a shadow board to be successful, Harvard Business Review recommends three actions: look beyond employees who already stand out, ensure the program is sponsored by the organization's CEO, and continue to evaluate and reiterate the program.
