Trump against cuts to Medicare, Medicaid

Leo Vartorella -

Though Republican congressional leaders have been divided on whether they should attempt to reform entitlements in 2018, a White House official says President Donald Trump is against any cuts to government programs such as Medicare and Medicaid, according to The Hill.

On the campaign trail, President Trump promised not to cut funds for Medicare, Medicaid or Social Security. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the White House press secretary, said he stands by that promise.

"The president hasn't changed his position at this point," Ms. Sanders said Wednesday, according to The Hill.

Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., said Republicans plan to tackle Medicaid and Medicare reform in 2018, adding that President Trump was warming to the idea. However, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said he didn't think entitlement reform was worth pursuing when Democrats would probably oppose it vehemently.
