WellStar Health System Purchases New Gingrich's Bankrupt Think Tank

WellStar Health System in Marietta, Ga., has acquired the Center for Health Transformation, a think tank established by Newt Gingrich, former speaker of the House of Representatives.

WellStar purchased the think tank for a "mere $20,000," according to an Atlanta Journal-Constitution report. Upon its establishment in 2003, the CHT was a for-profit entity structured to be a non-partisan collaborative between healthcare leaders in the private and public sector.

Gingrich Group, which did business under the health policy center’s name, filed for bankruptcy in April. Mr. Gingrich divested his interests in and control of the CHT in early 2011 when he pursued a presidential run as a Republican candidate.

Non-profit WellStar plans to operate the CHT as an independent, invitation-only network for 20 noncompeting, non-profit health systems. System CEOs and senior executives will share best practices to improve healthcare quality, reduce costs and increase access. CHT will be operated as a non-profit organization with funding coming from memberships.

Initially, membership will concentrate on systems in the southeastern region of the country. Mr. Gingrich said CHT's members will "decide what role — if any" he will have in the new collaborative network, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution report.
