Washington Post: Wilkie to shake up high-ranking VA officials

Emily Rappleye -

VA Secretary Robert Wilkie, sworn in July 30, is expected to reassign several political appointees within his first week to address morale issues and depoliticize the agency, according to a report from The Washington Post

Mr. Wilkie has reportedly already discussed the personnel issues with President Donald Trump, and announcements could come this week, according to sources who spoke with the Post anonymously. The Post reported the following potential reassignments:

  • Peter O'Rourke, VA acting secretary and former Trump campaign worker
  • Jacquelyn Hayes-Byrd, VA deputy chief of staff and acting chief of staff
  • John Ullyot, VA assistant secretary for public and intergovernmental affairs

VA press secretary Curt Cashour is reportedly seeking another job within the administration, according to the Post. Camilo Sandoval, acting CIO, is expected to leave the administration entirely.

James Byrne, VA general counsel, is expected to be named acting deputy secretary, a role that has been vacant since June. Pamela Powers, who served as Mr. Wilkie's chief of staff at the Defense Department, is expected to assume the same role under Mr. Wilkie's leadership in the VA.
