Washington Post: U of Maryland Medical System is 'ethically challenged'

Emily Rappleye -

In a recent editorial, The Washington Post Editorial Board wagers that Baltimore-based University of Maryland Medical System needs a "cultural overhaul" more than any other corporate entity in the state.

It deems the 13-hospital system "ethically challenged." The system has been embroiled in a conflict-of-interest scandal after reporting by the Baltimore Sun revealed at least a third of the health system's board profited off deals with the medical system. While the system has undergone audits and created a new conflict-of-interest policy, and new state regulations aim to refresh the board, The Washington Post editorial board suggests new policies may not go far enough.

The new conflict-of-interest policy only prohibits "contracts for board members and their firms that are not subject to competitive bidding," the editorial notes. "In this case, the network needs to go the extra mile to reassure the public that strict rules govern a critical player in Maryland's healthcare system."
