Virginia state Senate panel votes down Medicaid expansion: 3 things to know

The Virginia state Senate's Education and Health Committee voted down a proposal Thursday to expand Medicaid in the state, according to The Hill.

Here are three things to know.

1. The committee rejected the Medicaid expansion bill eight votes to seven.

2. The bill was proposed by state Sen. Emmett Hanger, R, and would have directed state officials to submit a Medicaid expansion waiver to CMS. It also included work requirements for able-bodied adults enrolled in the program.

3. Recently elected Gov. Ralph Northam, D, ran on a promise of expanding Medicaid. Even though this bill was voted down, another can still be proposed in the future.
