Veterans groups urge Trump to retain current VA secretary

Emily Rappleye -

Many veterans groups want President-elect Donald Trump to keep current VA Secretary Robert McDonald onboard, according to a report from The Washington Post.

These groups include American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled Veterans of America, Paralyzed Veterans of America, Vietnam Veterans of America and American Veterans, or AMVETS, according to the report. The groups have rejected two potential candidates for the job: Pete Hegseth, former CEO of Concerned Veterans for America, and former Sen. Scott Brown, R-Mass., according to the report.

However, some newer veteran groups oppose keeping Sec. McDonald on because they feel he has not done enough to improve inefficiencies within the agency, according to the report. These groups include CVA and Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America.

Sec. McDonald was appointed by President Barack Obama to lead the agency beginning in July 2014, after the large-scale wait time scandal was uncovered. Sec. McDonald previously served as chairman, president and CEO of Procter & Gamble and is an Army veteran. Before his appointment as VA secretary, he was an active Republican donor, according to The Washington Post.

Sec. McDonald told the Military Times he has not been approached to stay on in the Trump administration, but has said he would continue if an offer were made, according to the report.
