Luke Gregory, CEO of Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tenn., died Oct. 18, following a battle with lymphoma.

Mr. Gregory, who was also senior vice president for business development at Nashville-based Vanderbilt University Medical Center, was 63 years old, according to The Tennessean.

He joined Vanderbilt in 2007 as senior vice president and chief business development officer and became CEO of children's hospital in 2011. During his tenure, the children's hospital underwent several expansions, including the completion of the Doctor's Office Tower in 2012. The hospital is also currently in the midst of a 160,000-square-foot expansion project.

He also spearheaded the growth of the children's hospital's off-site services, including a surgery and clinics facility for children that will open soon in Murfreesboro, Tenn.

Mr. Gregory was a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and won the association's 2013 Regents Award. He was actively involved with numerous community organizations and boards, including the Children's Hospital Alliance for Tennessee and Tennessee Association for Homes and Services for the Aged.

"[Mr. Gregory] made countless contributions that were fundamental to the growth and vibrancy of our children's hospital, and many other programs throughout VUMC. We will remember Luke not only for his superb leadership, but also for the friendship, warmth and kindness he generously shared with everyone," said Jeff Balser, MD, PhD, president and CEO of Vanderbilt University Medical Center and dean of the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.

He is survived by his wife, two adult children, two grandchildren and his brother. A memorial service will be held Oct. 25.

The hospital has not yet named an interim leader.
