University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Highmark Contract May End in 2012

The physician provider agreement between the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and Highmark could end in 2012, according to a Pittsburgh Business Times report.

The contract deadline between UPMC and Highmark is June 30, 2012, but may be extended for one year in a run-out period. However, UPMC said in a statement that its agreement with Highmark could end with only two months' notice when the contract expires, according to the report.

The expiration of the contract between UPMC and Highmark would make UPMC physicians out-of-network providers for Highmark members except for those covered through Medicare Advantage or Gateway Health Plan.

UPMC has recently reached new contracts with CIGNA, Aetna and United Healthcare.
