Trump to unveil healthcare overhaul in September speech

Alia Paavola -

President Donald Trump is expected to unveil his plan to revamp the nation's healthcare system next month, according to Bloomberg.

The plan is expected to include proposals to lower drug prices, including establishing an "international pricing index" that would tie drug prices paid by Medicare to the price other developed countries pay.

A policy to protect people with pre-existing conditions from private health insurer discrimination and new programs to help the uninsured are also expected.

"We're working every single day here," White House counselor Kellyanne Conway told Bloomberg. "I've already been in meetings this morning on the president's healthcare plan. It's pretty impressive."

Ms. Conway said that President Trump's plan would also overhaul the Medicaid system and enable workers to more easily buy insurance plans from their employers.

In addition, the administration is considering proposals to expand health savings accounts, link price transparency efforts to quality metrics and allow the sale of insurance across state lines, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Many of the 2020 Democratic presidential candidates already have healthcare proposals and have made them a key element of their campaigns. The Trump administration is preparing the healthcare plan as part of a campaign strategy to offer an alternative to Medicare for All, the Wall Street Journal reported.
