Trump to unveil executive order on Medicare this week

Alia Paavola -

President Donald Trump will unveil an executive order regarding the Medicare system in a speech this week, two people familiar with the plan told Bloomberg.

The executive order is titled "Protecting Medicare from Socialist Destruction." The order will focus on Medicare Advantage plans, private plans that provide benefits to patients in place of the government.

White House spokesperson Judd Deere declined to share details of the announcement but said "From day one, President Trump and his administration have worked to provide seniors with high-quality, affordable care in the Medicare program and improved options through Medicare Advantage."

President Trump's plan will draw a clear contrast to those offered by Democrat presidential candidates, according to the report. Democrats are pushing for vastly expanded or universal Medicare, which President Trump says will increase costs. Instead, President Trump aims to increase choice and competition in Medicare, Bloomberg reported.

President Trump is also expected to touch on other healthcare topics during the speech, including the administration's previously announced plan to expand kidney dialysis services and the importance of providers shifting to value-based care.
