Total prescription drug sales in the United States were more than $286 billion last year, according to data reported by the Kaiser Family Foundation.
The Kaiser Family Foundation published the total sales for retail prescription drugs per state in 2015. The data includes sales from retail pharmacies in 814 defined regional zones, third-party payers and providers, as recorded in the IMS Vector One database.
Here are the 10 states with the highest prescription drug sales:
1. California: $35.26 billion
2. New York: $22.37 billion
3. Texas: $18.94 billion
4. Florida: $16.82 billion
5. Pennsylvania: $12.67 billion
6. Ohio: $11.78 billion
7. Illinois: $11.07 billion
8. Georgia: $9.42 billion
9. New Jersey: $9.16 billion
10. Michigan: $9.02 billion
And here are the 10 states with the lowest prescription drug sales:
1. Wyoming: $464 million
2. Alaska: $488 million
3. Montana: $691 million
4. Vermont: $776 million
5. Rhode Island: $786 million
6. North Dakota: $795 million
7. South Dakota: $821 million
8. New Mexico: $1.06 billion
9. Delaware: $1.11 billion
10. Hawaii: $1.17 billion
