Question: What keeps you excited and motivated to come to work each day?

DeWayne Wilson: I am motivated daily by the innovation we are bringing to the marketplace that is improving the overall healthcare experience. Our approach positively impacts the providers and members, resulting in increased patient satisfaction and healthier patient-provider relationships. This newly-implemented economic model is setting the bar even higher for providers beyond the Texas Health Aetna region.

We are committed to personalized care plans that produce measurable results, such as decreased high-cost claims and an increase in primary care visits. With our health and wellness initiatives alone, we aim to provide a deeper understanding of each member's health needs and an overall increase in quality care, such as early detection initiatives and personalized care plans for each member. It's truly an honor to represent a mission that prioritizes the importance of taking care of both members and providers. With Texas Health Aetna, members and providers have more than just a team of people to support them, they have a local family of experts they can rely on.

Q: What do you see as the most vulnerable part of a hospital's business?

DW: The most vulnerable part is the effective deployment, utilization and reliability of informatic resources and how they bridge the gap between physicians, the business and patients. It is essential for hospitals to adequately and effectively invest in IT infrastructure that will facilitate improved coordination with community clinicians. Through Texas Health Aetna's joint venture structure, we strive to create strong partnerships with community physicians, as well as ensuring the hospitals in our network are a key component in improving the outcomes and experiences of members, employers and providers that control much of the healthcare purchase decisions.

At Texas Health Aetna, we are redefining the overall healthcare experience — deploying local community-based resources designed to support providers, impact the quality of patient care and increase the value of employer-member benefits. Our teams identify the needs and solutions to pending issues for all participants in the health care continuum. We take the vulnerable parts of healthcare and aim to transform them into a resource unlike any other.

Q: What initially piqued your interest in healthcare?

DW: My father was a hospital administrator in the Navy. He began his career as a corpsman and achieved a significant leadership role in Navy medicine by placing a high emphasis on mentoring the corpsman in his units. A major initiative of Texas Health Aetna is emphasizing the importance of promoting a strong provider-member relationship at the community level. I'm reminded of my father's example in recognizing the contributions of his corpsman, who often were the first point of contact for many soldiers and sailors needing care, as we strive to build a simplified and comprehensive system to healthcare.
